In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The September revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Government Consultations Underway
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
