This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Here's a test for partners in committed relationships who appreciate scary movies: Settle in with your loved one and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere on Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like conventional body horror, but beneath Together exists a deep examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Debut Feature Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for a decade. Married in actuality in 2017, the two stars bring a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The plot commences when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the rural area for her career. A commonly used story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) physical transformations, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in his partner. This fear is intensified by the fact he can’t drive and relies on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.

The couple grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could act as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion inspire anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and state, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on today.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
