Users Coming Off Slimming Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who come off new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying these medications must be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the medication report a intense resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced something activating and you're instantly ravenous," described an individual.

The struggle is worsened if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
